Do you really need deepwater signage?

Mermaids, the Kraken, the Bermuda Triangle: if there’s one thing the ocean is full of (other than water), it’s myths.

And one of the most pervasive myths we see around here is this: that you don’t need identification markers on assets situated in deepwater.

OK, so it’s not quite as thrilling as mermaids, but it does need exploring!

“Marine growth isn’t a problem in deep waters” 🐡

Not true.

Traditionally, marine growth has been considered less of an issue when it comes to deepwater applications.

But, recent studies have already begun to dispel the myth that biofouling is only an issue in shallow waters. Research now shows that the manmade structures deployed by the oil and gas industry in deep waters have become new breeding grounds for microorganisms.

⛔️ “Subsea signage isn’t suitable for use in deepwater”

True in many cases. But not ours.

Certain types of subsea ID markers are unsuitable for use in deep waters. This is not a hospitable environment we’re talking about, and there are a few key points to consider:

  • Pressure
  • Environment
  • Visibility

Arguably the biggest factor, when designing products to be used in deepwater, is their ability to withstand the immense pressure of the environment.

Aquasign ID markers, adhesives and mechanical fixings have been tested in a hydrostatic pressure vessel. They were subjected to a pressure roughly equivalent to 23,000 feet of water depth and suffered zero damage.


With zero sunlight penetration, deep waters are intensely and consistently cold. We put our Aquasign markers, adhesives and fixings through a 72-hour -40°c soak test, then followed it up with a 48-hour, 12-cycle -10°c to +50°c temperature test.

The samples weren’t damaged, and the adhesives and fixings performed perfectly.


Where there’s zero sunlight penetration and high volumes of bio debris, visibility isn’t exactly at its best. That’s why Aquasign markers are made to exceed BS EN ISO 13628:1999 standards.

Our markers are clearly visible in artificial light from a minimum distance of five metres. And, their black on yellow design is shown to be the most effective for subsea visibility and doesn’t interfere with ROV cameras.
